EGL Tower ( 東瀛遊廣場 )
Client :
Billion Development & Project Management Ltd.
Location :
No. 83 Hung To Road, Kwun Tong, Kowloon
This tower has 2 major facades, one facing Hung To Road and the other facing King Yip Street overlooking the adjacent low rises towards the distant view of Laguna City.
The Hung To Road façade is the shorter end of the building on a long linear site and is composed of 3 distinct parts – the upper is vertically articulated to accentuate its 31 storey rise; the middle section is a horizontally expressed glass box to set up the rise; and the podium which brings the building to the ground is deliberately looking minimal to serve as the solid base and to highlight the glass entrance announced by a lantern on top.
The long side-façade facing King Yip Street, substantially set back from the adjacent property, is conceived as the continuation of the front and a back-drop for a dominant attached middle section. The standout middle section inclines and folds inward towards the main mass at the top 7 floors and end as a prominent roof feature for the tower. A large opening at the top floors reveals the rest of the building as back drop, demonstrating that the middle section is a natural outgrowth rather than simply an indifferent addition to the tower. The overall resulting symmetry confers a sense of importance to the development.
